The second brother uses the Resurrection Stone and dies

The Tales of Beedle the Bard

The second brother’s use of the Resurrection Stone turns his attempt to recover a lost beloved into a tragic encounter with the limits of return. The Stone brings her figure back before him, but not the shared life he longs to regain; unable to bear that separation, he dies in the hope of joining her.

The Stone and Its Promise

When Death offers each of the three brothers a prize for evading him, the second brother asks for the power to recall the dead. His request is meant to humiliate Death further, and Death gives him a stone from the riverbank that can bring the dead back. The gift promises an answer to loss, but the tale’s outcome exposes the difference between summoning someone and restoring them to life.

A Beloved Returned

At home, where he lives alone, the second brother takes out the Stone and turns it three times in his hand. The girl he had once hoped to marry appears at once. Her arrival brings him amazement and delight, seemingly granting the reunion he sought after her untimely death.

That promise fails as soon as the nature of her return becomes clear. She is silent and cold, separated from him as though by a veil. Although she has come back to the mortal world, she does not truly belong there and suffers. The Stone can summon her presence, but it cannot erase the boundary between the living and the dead.

Despair and Death

The second brother is driven mad with hopeless longing by the distance between them. He kills himself in order to join her, turning the reunion he had tried to achieve through magic into his own death. The tale does not present the Stone as restoring their former relationship; instead, its partial success makes the separation visible and intensifies his despair.

Death then takes the second brother for his own. His fate contrasts with that of the youngest brother, who distrusts Death’s offer and later greets Death as an old friend. The episode makes the second brother’s gift a tragic answer to loss: he can call the dead back into view, but cannot make them belong to the living again.
